1 August 2026, Penang - Learning Beyond the Classroom: Foodicious Expo & Pet Expo, Penang
On 1 August 2026, Year 1 Semester 1 students from the Bachelor of Tourism Management (Event Management) programme visited the Foodicious Expo and Pet Expo in Penang as part of an experiential learning activity. The visit allowed students to step out of the classroom and observe how real events are planned, organised, and managed in a live setting.
At the Foodicious Expo, students explored how food events use creative booth designs, product displays, sampling, and promotions to attract visitors. They also observed how crowd flow, hygiene, safety, and sustainability are managed to ensure a smooth and enjoyable visitor experience.
At the Pet Expo, students experienced a different type of event where animals, people, and products come together. They observed space planning, animal safety, interactive activities, and how emotional engagement plays an important role in attracting pet lovers.
Overall, the visit helped students understand that every event requires careful planning, creativity, teamwork, and strong management skills. It also encouraged them to think like future event managers by observing how events are designed and delivered from behind the scenes.
The trip was a valuable and enjoyable learning experience that connected classroom knowledge with real-world event practice.
1 August 2026, Ipoh - MATTA Fair 2026: An Educational Tour Beyond the Classroom
On 1 August 2026, 18 students from the Diploma in Tourism Management (DTM Y2S1) and Bachelor of Tourism Management (Honours) in Event Management (REV Y2S1 & Y3S1) headed to the MATTA Fair 2026 at Ipoh Convention Centre for an educational tour!
At Malaysia's premier travel fair, students had the chance to engage directly with:
Tourism boards
Travel agencies
Airlines
Hotels
Destination marketing organisations. Through hands-on enquiry and observation, they gained real insights into destination marketing, tourism promotion, travel trends, and career opportunities in the industry!
A special highlight? Meeting their seniors who are currently undergoing Industrial Training with participating travel agencies! Seeing seniors apply what they learned in university to real industry settings was truly inspiring.
Motivated by these encounters, many students took the initiative to introduce themselves to industry representatives and enquire about future Industrial Training placements — an important first step in building their professional network!
Students also discovered how destinations are embracing sustainability through:
Promoting responsible travel
Preserving cultural heritage
Supporting local communities
Developing eco-conscious tourism experiences. Beyond the learning, it was a fun-filled day too! Students explored vibrant exhibition booths, chatted with exhibitors, and discovered exciting destinations from Malaysia and around the world.
Experiences like these reflect our University's commitment to experiential learning — equipping students with industry knowledge, professional confidence, and the connections needed to become future-ready tourism professionals!
6 - 8 August 2026, Penang - Learning Beyond the Classroom: Educational Visit to Penang
Learning becomes even more meaningful when students get the opportunity to step outside the classroom and experience the industry firsthand!
Our students from the Diploma in Event Management, Bachelor of Tourism in Event Management, and Bachelor of Hospitality and Catering Management recently embarked on an exciting educational visit to Penang, combining adventure, nature, hospitality, and industry exposure into one unforgettable learning experience.
Adventure & Teamwork through ATV Experience
The journey began with an exciting ATV adventure, where students stepped out of their comfort zones and challenged themselves in an outdoor environment. Beyond the thrill and excitement, the experience encouraged teamwork, communication, leadership, problem-solving, and risk awareness — skills that are highly valuable in the event, tourism, and hospitality industries.
Connecting with Nature through Camping at The Habitat
Students then experienced camping at The Habitat Penang Hill, where learning continued in a completely different environment. Immersed in nature, they gained a deeper appreciation of sustainable tourism, environmental awareness, destination experiences, and outdoor event activities. The camping experience also strengthened their ability to adapt, collaborate, and work together as a team.
Industry Learning at DoubleTree Resort Penang
The educational journey continued with an insightful industry talk and site visit at DoubleTree Resort Penang. Students had the opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to the operations of a hospitality establishment and understand how different departments work together to deliver memorable guest experiences.
Through the industry sharing and site visit, students gained valuable insights into hospitality operations, event planning, guest services, venue management, food and beverage operations, service quality, and the importance of professionalism in the industry.
On 3 August 2026, TAR UMT Perak Branch had the pleasure of hosting an insightful industry talk, “Working in Macau”, featuring Ms Jacinta Ho, Founder & Managing Director, and Mr Amos Tan, Director of Hospitality Talent Management, from JC Human Resources Consulting, Macau.
Our students gained valuable insights into:
